Chicago Human Rhythm Project keeps tapping
along
April 26, 2005 It's
a lot like beating a drum with your feet. And it keeps
you on your toes and your heels. This is tap dancing the
way Chicagoan Lane Alexander does it.
ABC7 Video
"I was a pre-law major in college and miserable and I don't recommend this to other kids. But I left college to pursue a career in dance," said Lane Alexander, tap dancer. "I dropped out of school at the age of 23."
Fifteen years ago, Alexander co-founded the Chicago
Human Rhythm Project, one of the world's foremost presenters
of tap and percussive dance. He leads the organization
as artist director. BAM! is the name of his current
ensemble.
"There's a lot of people to learn from," said Kristi Burris, ensemble member. "I think he is one of the best around to learn from."
"He's a great role model for people to do what ever...he's
an awesome tap and an awesome teacher I learn a lot
from him," said Zada Cheeks.
Internationally known Lane Alexander has performed as a soloist at major festivals-- not only in this country but in Austria and China and many of the countries in between. Alexander's career of more than 30 years has included the movies and TV. "I feel there's a lot more I still want to do to pass on because that's part of the tap tradition is not just do it for yourself but to take what I've learned from the masters and make sure that gets passed on to the next generation," said Lane Alexander. "Episode 10 spotlights the wide-ranging talented
companies presented by The Chicago Human Rhythm Project,
including Lane Alexander and BAM!, Rhythm ISS and the
legendary Fayard Nicholas. Lane and his dancers provide
insight into the worlds and styles of tap dance, and
Fayard offers evidence that dance just might be the
fountain of youth. Even his conversations with Sam Albert
and the dancers of Jump Rhythm Jazz Project will make
you want to get up and dance."
